United Network for Organ Sharing Headquarters

The UNOS Headquarters Building was constructed in downtown Richmond’s Biotechnology Research Park.

The five-story complex includes 80,000 square feet of steel framed office space situated adjacent to and atop a 208-car, post-tensioned cast-in-place concrete parking garage, resting on a 77-post caisson foundation.

The building is fitted with a data center containing the national patient waiting list for organ transplantation.
UNOS operates a 24-hour-a-day organ placement center and computer system to ensure efficient and optimal matching of donors and recipients. The data center meets or exceeds tier III reliability standards.

KBS was the Construction Manager for the project. The project was completed two months early. Working on a fast track schedule, the building continued to be designed and refined at each continuing stage.

KBS also completed the UNOS National Donor Memorial — the only of its kind in the world — a 10,000-square foot memorial garden including three metaphorical areas symbolizing the hope, renewal and transformation which occurs during the organ donation and transplantation process.

The memorial features a stone wall with a streaming fountain, a butterfly planting garden, an 11-foot concrete wall engraved with the names of donors containing niches for memorial items and a fountain emptying water over a sculpture of hands cupped together.
