KBS, a construction services firm headquartered in Richmond, was named among the top 400 contractors in the U.S. by Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine. KBS’s ranking rose this year to #249, a significant jump from #325 in 2020. This is the best ranking earned by the firm during the last 16 years.
“We are very proud of our longstanding position on the ENR Top 400 Contractors list,” says John Gillenwater, vice president of business development at KBS. “KBS sustained growth throughout 2020 and into 2021. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic had a big impact on our work last year. While so many things were shutting down, the construction industry met the challenge of keeping essential work moving along while keeping workers safe.”
ENR reports this year’s Top 400 Contractors revenue results don’t immediately show how virus prevention methods changed productivity among firms. But numbers do show that securing construction’s essential status helped contractors avoid devastating losses. Despite the pandemic, aggregate 2020 revenue for the Top 400 reached $414.88 billion, 0.12% more than on last year’s list—another record year, albeit by a small margin.
Every year, ENR conducts a survey of large general contractors, engineers, architects and construction and program managers from around the world. The Top 400 Contractors list, published annually in May, ranks the 400 general contractors, both publicly and privately held, based on construction contracting-specific revenue.
